Abstract

This chapter proposes a different theological reading of Old Testament texts. First, it analyses the conceptual dichotomies that rule Von Rad's paper from 1936. In doing so, the chapter makes explicit a number of associations when talking about and The chapter focuses on prophetic texts and the Psalms that link covenant with creation. It discusses that the texts reveal three theological motives for making this connection: (1) the universalization of the covenant in space, as encompassing all peoples and the whole world, and also in time, as eschatologically realized at the end of history, (2) the belief that Israel's keeping of the covenant depends on God's activity and (3) the incomprehensibility and ineffability of the divine covenant partner. The chapter then turns to the texts in Genesis 1-3. It claims that Genesis 1 is about creation, while Genesis 2-3 is a story, but not about creation.
