Abstract

The proton nuclear magnetic resonance line for H2O in nerve is broadened when the K+ concentration of the physiological solution is increased 30×. The difference between nerve in normal compared to high K+ solution was maintained during an observation period of 100 h. Changes in linewidth are attributed to alteration in viscosity of the H2O associated with a changing contribution of metabolic H2O to the signal.
