Abstract

Summary A number of nitrogen fixing bacteria isolated from the leaf surface of different crop plants were grown in nitrogen free medium at different concentrations of sucrose and their nitrogen fixing capabilities were tested by the usual microkjeldahl method. Higher rates of nitrogen fixation were recorded with lower concentration (0.2%) of sucrose in the medium. Two strains identified as Beijerinckia indica and Azotobacter chroococcum isolated from jute and rice respectively showed highest nitrogen fixing ability with minimum sugar consumption.
