Abstract

Summary The rates of both nitrate utilization and nitrite accumulation under anaerobiosis showed a hyperbolic relationship to increasing nitrate concentrations. Anaerobiosis stimulated the rate of nitrate utilization above the aerobic rate. Nitrite accumulation was always associated with the anaerobic stimulation of nitrate utilization. The ratio of nitrate disappearance to nitrite accumulation under anaerobic conditions departs markedly from a 1 : 1 ratio. This departure suggests that nitrite is further metabolized under anaerobiosis and the concentration of the nitrite present represents a turnover pool resulting from the differential rates of nitrite production and nitrite reduction.
