Abstract
India's seventh Nipah virus (NiV) outbreak, which predominantly occurred in Kerala, highlights the urgent need for heightened preparedness, with a recent fatal case in Malappuram. NiV, a zoonotic disease, remains a critical threat owing to its high mortality rate and potential for rapid human-to-human transmission. The virus is primarily transmitted from fruit bats to humans, which underscores the need for robust infection control measures. Kerala's dense vegetation, urbanization, and human activities contribute to recurring outbreaks. Despite Kerala's effective management and improved response post-COVID-19, concerns persist about the preparedness of other states. A comprehensive 'One Health' approach, enhanced diagnostic capabilities, and international collaboration are essential for effective future outbreak management and prevention.
