Abstract
Metamagnetic shape memory alloy (MMSMA), in which the martensitic transformation temperature can be controlled by a magnetic field, is a new type of magnetic shape memory material. In MMSMAs, because unique physical properties, such as giant magnetoresistance, giant magneto-thermal conductivity and inverse magnetocaloric effects, are observed to be associated with the martensitic transformation, these materials are good candidates for application as actuators and sensors acting in mixed external fields of temperature, stress and magnetic field. In the present Viewpoint, some interesting and unique properties in the MMSMAs are introduced, and some criteria of materials design for practical use are discussed.
