Abstract

The World Health Organization (WHO) is providing emphasis on the exploration of medicinal plant species for the benefit of human care and systems. Recently, a great deal of attention has given to the seed and oils of black cumin. Nigella sativa Linn., belong to family Ranunculaceae, is grown in many parts of the world. It is one of the most important medicinal plants because it has multipurpose uses and contains phytochemical components such as alkaloids, terpenoids, saponins, flavonoids, sterols, tannins, and derivatives, showing antimicrobial activity. Scientific research has been published on the bioactivity and medicinal properties of Nigella sativa seeds. Seeds also used as chemical remedies and as traditional pharmacological properties such as antidiabetic, antihypertensive, anticancer and anti-inflammatory properties. In the recent years, green syntheses methods are much more important than chemical methods because green methods use the reduction technique using plant extracts instead of chemicals. It is more economical and eco-friendly than the chemical method. The present chapter discusses the current knowledge about the green syntheses from Nigella sativa seed extracts and their potential biological activities. Keywords Nigella sativa Essential oilGreen synthesisGreen chemistryNanoparticles
