Abstract

A robust literature indicates that untreated and undertreated perinatal-childhood mental health conditions can have significant adverse effects on caregivers, children, and family well-being. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to the forefront stark inequities in access to family mental health services. Perinatal and child mental health consultation “access programs” are an innovative model that can be leveraged to address health inequities in 2-generation family mental health. This Clinical Perspectives aims to: 1) describe this evidence-based care-delivery model to address the growing demand for mental health services; 2) provide examples of perinatal and child access programs with varied levels of integration, with a focus on the challenges and opportunities for existing and future programs; and 3) discuss how integration of these models may address inequities in mental health access and future directions to increase the health equity focus in perinatal and child consultation.
