Abstract

AbstractA survey is given on recent kinetic investigations on the acid catalyzed degradation of cotton cellulose covering the high, medium and low molecular weight range. As it is revealed, there can be distinguished four subsequent particular stages according to the molecular weight range in which the degradation takes place. Possible interpretations of this phenomenon are discussed taking into account, besides of the kinetic data, the behaviour with time of degradation of the molecular weight distribution, the degree of substitution arising through nitration, and the portion of material dissolved in the acid medium.
