Abstract

Abstract Most of the papers published in this issue were presented to the Centenary Staff Conference of the New Zealand Geological Survey. This was the twenty-first in a series that began in 1945 when the small staff in outlying districts was called to Wellington to farewell the retiring Director, Dr John Henderson. Succeeding Directors have made it part of their staff policy to continue these conferences annually, sometimes combined with larger scientific conferences or congresses; and an effort has been made to hold them in various parts of the country so that geologists based in Wellington or other centres can benefit through field excursions and obtain a background knowledge of geological features and problems in areas otherwise unfamiliar to them.
