Abstract

Abstract Simmonds Island (N4/652121) lies just over 1 mile off shore in Henderson Bay, 1,000 yd due north of Grenville Point (Fig. 2). As a preliminary to the possible reservation and declaration of the island as a Wildlife Reserve, it was examined for evidence of mineralisation by Mr H. E. Rowe, Inspector of Mines, Auckland, and the author. Most of the time spent on the island was devoted to a search for minerals, but brief geological notes were made and samples collected for petrological examination. The petroiogical determinations were carried out by Dr G. A. Challis, New Zealand Geological Survey, Lower Hutt. Sample localities are shown on the map (Fig. 2) by the appropriate record sheet numbers.
