Abstract

We have succeded in the crystal growth of La 2- x Ba x CuO 4 ( x≤0.15) by the travelling-solvent floating-zone (TSFZ) method for the first time. The new technique we have adopted is growth under reduced atmosphere with a crystallized feed rod. This technique prevents the reduction of Ba content in the molten zone, which is caused by the penetration of the solvent into the feed rod. The grown boules are single phase and their Ba contents are homogeneous. A further problem is that the crystals have a mosaic structure.
