Abstract

A new optical supernova remnant has been found in the constellation Cygnus where 2 others—gamma Cygni and the Cynus Loop —were already known. This new optical supernova was discovered by 3 scientists observing at Kitt Peak National Observatory.Theodore Gull (Lockheed Electronics Company), Robert Kirshner (University of Michigan), and Robert A. R. Parker (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) discovered the new supernova, a huge egg‐shaped shell that measures about 220 light years in diameter. As it expands at a rate of more than 160,000 km/hour, the remnant is pushing a much larger shell of neutral hydrogen through the interstellar medium.
