Abstract
Hikuroa, D.C.H. & Grant-Mackie, J.A., March, 2008. New species of Late Jurassic Australobuchia (Bivalvia) from the Murihiku Terrane, Port Waikato – Kawhia region, New Zealand. Alcheringa 32, 73‐98. ISSN 0311-5518. Five new forms of Australobuchia from New Zealand are described—two new species, A. wherowhero, A. partimlirata, and three in open nomenclature, A. sp. aff. A. partimlirata, A. sp. aff. A. plicata, and A. sp. aff. A. hochstetteri. Validity of the genus Australobuchia Zakharov, 1981, initially proposed for southern Buchia but not previously accepted by New Zealand workers, is confirmed. New Zealand Australobuchia in the Murihiku Terrane are Late Jurassic in age, based on ammonite, belemnite, bivalve, and palynofloral biostratigraphy. A new regional zonation is proposed using the three most common and widespread New Zealand Australobuchia—A. wherowhero sp. nov, A. hochstetteri (Fleming), and A. plicata (Zittel) in ascending stratigraphic order. Confirmation of byssal attachment for Australobuchia supports interpretation of a gregarious habit, thriving in silty to sandy substrates offshore from eastern Gondwana, on the outer shelf/upper slope.
