Abstract

Globospongicola jiaolongi n. sp. of the deep-sea spongicolid genus Globospongicola Komai and Saito, 2006, is described based on two specimens collected from a cold vent area of the South China Sea. It represents the third species of this genus. The new species is distinguished from its closest congener, G. spinulatus Komai and Saito, 2006, by an unarmed dorsal margin of the ischium of the third pereiopod in the female, a median spine on the posterior margin of the telson and 2 dorsal carinae on the endopod of the uropod. Additional analysis based on 16S rRNA is provided with discussion of the phylogenetic positions of Globospongicola and its related genera.
