Abstract

Abstract Single crystals of KH2PO4, KH2AsO4, NH4H2PO4 and NH4H2AsO4 were grown from aqueous solutions. The dielectric constants parallel and perpendicular to the tetragonal axis of the crystals were measured by an ac-method as a function temperature. The spontaneous polarizations were determined from hysteresis loops at saturation. Curie temperatures of 115 K and 91 K for KH2PO4 and KH2AsO4 respectively were found from a Curie-Weiss plot. The ammonium salts do not show ferroelectricity. The crystals of NH4H2PO4 and NH4H2AsO4 disintegrate into small pieces at 155 K and 220 K approximately, due to a structural transition apparently. Attention is drawn to the existence of O—H…O bonds in these crystals which might be important for the occurrence of seignettc-electricity.
