Abstract

This work presents an approach for reconstructing the orientation of prior austenite using the martensite crystallography from an electron backscatter diffraction dataset. To optimize the accuracy and speed of reconstruction, the algorithm comprises three steps: orientation relationship refinement, orientation coalescence, and regional voting. Martensitic stainless steels with/without retained austenite were used to demonstrate this approach. The reconstruction parameters can be determined theoretically or semi-theoretically in this algorithm. Moreover, mis-indexing near the twinning boundaries of prior austenite is minimized in the regional voting process. Although some issues remain unsolved, this approach provides a balance between accuracy and efficiency in austenite reconstruction.
