Abstract
NEW GUIDELINES on preventive care may have much greater impact than others before, because they are backed by both those who do and those who pay for the procedures. The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, the nation's largest private insurer, and the American College of Physicians, one of the largest medical specialty societies, collaborated for 3 years to produce guidelines that they say constitute a model preventive services insurance benefit package. The guidelines were first presented in the Annals of Internal Medicine (1991; 144:758-783) and are now in a book, Common Screening Tests , which is available from the American College of Physicians in Philadelphia, Pa. The guidelines recommend specific screening strategies for heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, thyroid disease, osteoporosis, and cancer of the breast, colon, cervix, and lung. Interventions such as exercise stress and thyroid disease tests in asymptomatic people are not recommended. Emphasis is given to selective screening
