Abstract

In view of the recent synthesis and characterization of the novel pentagonal planar (D 5h) XeF 5 − anion, it was of interest to attempt the synthesis of the corresponding OTeF 5 substituted anion, Xe(OTeF 5) 5 −, as well as the series of mixed F/OTeF 5 anions, XeF n(OTeF 5) 5−n − (n = 1 − 4). So far all efforts to prepare these anions have failed, rather reactions of Xe (OTeF 5) 4 with N(CH 3) 4 +F − or N(CH 3) 4 +OTeF 5 − in CH 3CN have resulted in the formation of the new Xe(IV) oxo-species OXeF(OTeF 5) and OXe(OTeF 5) 2. These species, together with the previously known OXeF 2, have been characterized in solution for the first time by 129Xe and 19F NMR spectroscopy. Analogous reactions with OTeF 5 derivatives of Xe(VI) and Te(VI) will also be discussed.
