Abstract

After 24 years as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Applied Chemical and Physical Sciences at Napier University in Edinburgh, Dr. Jim Allan was appointed to a Professorship in March 1993. Jim joined Napier as a Lecturer from North Stafford Polytechnic in 1967, and was promoted to his current position in 1970. For his research on metallo-organic compounds, he was awarded a PhD degree in 1966 from the University of Strathclyde. His search to find industrial applications for metal complexes and metal containing polymers led to studies of their properties as pigments, activators, semi-conductors, antistatic agents, amine scavengers, catalysts and drug release agents. The research has resuited in over 140 referred papers being published in major international chemical journals. In recognition of his contribution to the study of metal complexes and metal containing polymers, Jim was awarded a DSc degree by the University of Strathclyde on the 7th July 1992, when the photography was taken. That was the first occasion when a member of Napier University staff received such an award for research work. Current research being undertaken by Jim and his group includes investigations of metal!o-organic compounds of pyrazines as pigments and investigations into the biofouling control of seawater cooling systems.
