Abstract
Following successful demonstration of its new maleic anhydride process, BP Chemicals is now licensing the process worldwide. The first largescale trial production has been completed in Osaka, Japan, in a refurbished acrylonitrile plant, over a two-year period. The new process was described recently by W. According to Gault, maleic anhydride technology was originally based on benzene conversion, but in recent years the preferred feedstock has changed to n -butane. Several processes are currently available and the newest ones use catalytic fluid beds. BP Chemicals' new process incorporates such catalytic fluid-bed technology, which, in turn, has been coupled to proven recovery and purification technology developed by UCB of Belgium.
