Abstract

Data from the EUROGAM I array has given many new insights into superdeformed nuclei at high rotational frequency. The occupation of the high-N intruder orbitals can be obtained from data on moments of inertia. The role and importance of static pairing correlations and their quenching at high frequencies are discussed. There is evidence of a ΔI=4 staggering of energy levels in several superdeformed bands and indicates that information can be obtained on the influence of four-fold symmetries in shapes of nuclei.
