Abstract

The Curtiss 77 (SBC‐4) Hclkliver is one of the types which were inherited as a result of the collapse of France. The present aeroplane is the last of a line of biplane dive bombers, going back to the XF8C‐2 of 1928, which have borne the name Helldivcr. Each type was developed from the previous one, but the confusion of having four or five aeroplanes with the same name is considerable. The XBC‐4s were released to France by the U.S. Navy; a number were in the aircraft carrier Báarn, which is still lying at Martinique, while about forty were delivered to Great Britain, where it has been re‐named Cleveland.
