Abstract
Increasing service life requirements, longer service intervals and use under extremely harsh environmental conditions force the development of new solutions for crankshaft seals in the commercial vehicle sector. Radial shaft sealing rings in designs in use today are in some cases no longer able to provide the required degree of protection. Based on around 400 damage cases Federal Mogul has made a detailed analysis of the most relevant causes of seal failure. The results were instrumental in developing a new type of cassette seal with non-contacting, labyrinth dirt exclusion.
