Abstract
A new activated cathode for chlor-alkali electrolysis is described. It is a composite coating consisting in a first RuO 2 thermal layer, on a nickel support, modified by a second layer made of electroless nickel. This electrocatalyst permits a 250 mV saving in hydrogen overpotential compared to smooth nickel: this improvement is quite stable for a long period of time in membrane cell conditions and is not affected by iron impurity in the catholyte. Electrochemical kinetic study reveals a RuO 2− like behavior with additional surface area effect.
