Abstract
A novel formulation of the wide-angle beam propagation method (WA-BPM) for optical tapers is presented. The new technique utilises the tapered co-ordinate system and the Padé approximation of the square root operator in the series form, which allows higher order WA approximations to be calculated without additional programming effort. In order to verify the accuracy and the convergence rate of the new algorithm calculations were carried out for some selected optical taper structures, which are frequently referred to in the literature. The results obtained confirm that the new technique - wide angle beam propagation method in the tapered co-ordinate system allows better suppression of numerical noise in comparison with the WA-BPM in the rectangular co-ordinate system while preserving high numerical efficiency.
