Abstract
A new barium tantalum sulphide, Ba 9Ta 4S 20, has been prepared by two methods; reaction of CS 2 gas over a mixture of BaCO 3 and Ta 2O 5, and reaction of the elements in an evacuated silica tube. The powder X-ray diffraction peaks of the compound were indexed on the basis of a hexagonal cell with lattice constants of a=6.959A and c=21.558A. The electron diffraction measurements also supported this result.
