Abstract

A new barium tantalum sulphide, Ba 2TaS 5, has been prepared by the reaction of CS 2 with a mixture of BaCO 3 and Ta 2O 5. Powder X-ray diffraction peaks and electron diffraction spots for the compound were indexable on the basis of a hexagonal cell with lattice constants of a = 6.926A, c = 49.43A. Refinement with powder X-ray diffraction data showed that it is isostructural with the Ba 2NbS 5 reported by Swinnea (1).
