Abstract

Alcohol use disorders (AUD) are psychiatric conditions affecting about 5% of population in a sex-specific way (Glantz et al., 2020). However, the mechanisms of gender differences in alcohol consumption are poorly studied. Previous studies showed that ceramide rheostat mediates sex-specific differences in the mechanisms of memory and depression (Kalinichenko et al., 2020; Zoicas et al., 2020). We investigated the role of an enzyme of ceramide metabolism, neutral sphingomyelinase (NSM), in gender-based mechanisms of alcohol self-determined use.
