Abstract

Recent results for ( π 0, η) production in relativistic heavy ion collisions at SIS are discussed. Meson production probabilities follow simple scaling laws with available energy and number of participants. In contrast, the pion transverse momentum spectra show strong variations with system size, pointing out the importance of multi-step processes and final state interaction. The new dilepton project HADES at GSI is introduced. The design and the physics program of HADES is discussed.
