Abstract

Comment The report is a brief discussion primarily for the benefit of neurosurgeons unfamiliar with the syndrome of malignant hyperthermia (MH). Three patients are briefly mentioned who underwent uneventful neurosurgical procedures after previously having their surgery aborted because of suspected MH episodes. Not surprisingly, MH did not occur when a “clean” technique was used. Anesthesiologists will learn little from this paper although a commentary by Drs. Grundy and Kaplan (from the Anesthesiology Department in Gainesville, Florida) addresses a few of the controversial issues. Neurosurgeons (like all surgeons) need to know that MH exists and should work with anesthesiologists who know how to prevent and treat this rare but potentially fatal problem. Mark A. Rockoff, M.D.
