Abstract

Dr. Mark Gold, a distinguished psychiatrist and neuroscience professor, has left an unprecedented mark on addiction medicine. His pioneering work introduced groundbreaking theories that revolutionised the field, serving as the foundation for subsequent research on opioid withdrawal symptoms. His first major contribution was the discovery of a brain region called the locus coeruleus as a key player in opioid withdrawal. This discovery opened the door to innovative treatments like clonidine, for which he owns the patent. His lifelong career in substance abuse research concluded with yet another trailblazing study uncovering the harmful effects of thirdhand opium smoke on children.
