Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1989, Vol 34(11), 1028-1029. Reviews the book, Assessment of Developmental Learning Disorders: A Neuropsychological Approach by Rita G. Rudel, Jane M. Holmes, and Joan Rudel Pardes (see record 1988-97656-000). This book is not a comprehensive text, but focuses on assessment of learning disorders (LDs), the first five chapters provide an introduction that overlaps with the content of other books on child neuropsychology. The first chapter deals with concepts and issues, the second with learning difficulties representation, and the third with attention deficit disorder. The second part begins with a chapter by Rudel on history taking, followed by three chapters by Holmes (the context for assessment, history and observations, and testing), and the final section by Parnes deals with educational implications. In sum, this book provides a good and readable primer for educators and students entering the clinical child and LD area but adds little for the experienced teacher or child neuropsychologist.
