Abstract

Electroneurophysiology, bioengineering and the application of control theory have increased markedly the knowledge of the oculomotor system and have put its study in the realm of exact sciences. As clinicians, interested in the treatment of strabismus and oculomotor disturbances, we have to consider the results of that fundamental research. The oculomotor system is a control system, the function of which is to acquire visual targets rapidly and, once acquired, to stabilize their images on the retina in spite of relative movements between target and observer (39). There are five types of oculomotor activity : fixation (static condition) and saccades, smooth pursuit, vergence and vestibular eye movements (dynamic conditions).
