Substance use is a chronic condition characterized by remissions and relapses.1 Substance use disorder, commonly referred to as addiction, is a complex and chronic medical condition characterized by the harmful or hazardous use of substances. It affects the brain and behavior, leading to an inability to control one’s use of these substances despite the negative consequences.
