Abstract

Although its application has been restricted to specific patient profiles, in vitro maturation (IVM) of germinal vesicle oocytes may represent an alternative to reduce infertility treatment cost and risk/discomfort. The bovine IVM model has been particularly valuable to improve our comprehension about the regulation of cumulus-oocyte maturation, as well as to develop IVM strategies for sub-fertile women. Gradual instead of abrupt activation of the ovulatory cascade during IVM has been proposed to enhance nuclear-cytoplasmic synchrony and cumulus-oocyte communication, thus favoring developmental competence.
