Abstract

The new compound Na 3TlO 2, has been prepared by oxidation of NaTl with Na 2O 2 (pro analyse, Merck) in a closed silver cylinder (580 °C, 14 days). The yellow single crystals of Na 3TlO 2 are orthorhombic ( Pnma): a = 1145.61 (20) pm, b = 670.67(9) pm, c = 536.76(8) pm; Z = 4 (four-circle diffractometer; Philips PW 1100; 892 I 0 ( hkl); Ag Kα; R = 7.3%, R w = 8.3%). The structure is essentially codetermined by holes. The Madelung Part of the lattice energy, MAPLE, is calculated.
