Abstract
In Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), Routing protocol is a research hotspot due to its rapidly increasing application in monitoring various kinds of environment by sensing physical phenomenon. Since the sensor nodes have a limited transmission range, processing power, storage capabilities and energy resources, routing protocols must be able to prolong the lifetime of a network. In this paper, we first outline the design challenges for routing protocols in WSNs. Then, we classify the current network-structure-based routing protocols into different kinds, and we also describe and compare these kinds of routing protocols that can be used to improve the network lifetime. Besides, we also point out several further research direction of routing in WSNs.
