Abstract

Mary-Beth Raddon’s article “Neoliberal Legacies: Planned Giving and the New Philanthropy” analyzes recent discourse surrounding planned giving, in particular, and illustrates the ways in which philanthropy is consolidating and advancing neoliberal hegemony. It is specifically concerned with how policies and practices of philanthropy are reconfiguring relationships of wealth, the state, and citizenship. It studies how the very conditions for philanthropy, and discourses about them, simultaneously confirm and validate the process of neoliberalization within the charitable sector by legitimizing social inequality, facilitating welfare state restructuring, and promoting a narrow ideal of citizenship as practised through private charity.
