Abstract

The feeding relationships of common soil nematodes from subalpine tussock grassland soil of the Southern Alps of New Zealand were investigated. Twenty-three species of stylet-bearing and 18 species of non stylet-bearing species were observed separately in laboratory feeding trials. Twenty-one of the stylet-bearing nematodes fed on one or more of grass seedlings, lucerne callus, fungi, algae, moss and other nematodes, but none of the 23 fed on bacteria. Sixteen species of the non stylet-bearing nematodes fed and reproduced on mixed bacterial plates, and 11 were established on cultures of single species of bacteria.
