Abstract

Feminist ethicist Virginia Held sees an ethic of care as central to development of an adequate feminist ethics. A few scholars note the general compatibility of Martin Buber's philosophy of dialogue with feminist attempts to develop a “relational ethic” or an “ethic of care.” A few others note in passing Nel Noddings's reliance on Buber's philosophy of dialogue in her Caring: A Feminine Approach to Ethics and Moral Education. Among the questions that guide this essay are: How accurately and adequately does Noddings employ Buber? What functions does Buber serve for Noddings? How might her version of a care ethic be strengthened by using aspects of Buber's philosophy of dialogue not highlighted by her?
