Rural arts events (triennials/festivals) are mainly aimed at local and regional revitalization. This exhibition-driven tourism (unlike traditional festivals, conferences, and exhibitions) has existed for more than 20 years in Japan. The curators of exhibition-driven tourism hope that these events can promote the economy and stop population decline as a result of the aging population. Therefore, this paper attempts to evaluate the effects of urban and rural arts event tourism in local and neighborhood areas in Niigata, Japan from the perspective of SDG 8.9. The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial and Water and Land Niigata Art Festival were chosen as case studies. Panel data (1997–2019) concerning tourists, income, and population in Niigata were evaluated using multiple empirical methods with descriptive correlation statistics (simple linear regression (SLR) and one-way ANOVA) and spatial analysis (Moran’s I). Through multiple-method analysis, the positive impacts of urban and rural arts event tourism in local and neighborhood areas in relation to Sustainable Development Goal 8.9 were evaluated. The findings presented herein have meaningful implications for tourism academia and the industry in general.

Envisaged for Sustainable Rural Development: Viability and Challenges of Rural Tourism in Nepal
  • Nov 20, 2016
  • REPOSITIONING The Journal of Business and Hospitality
  • Prakash Upadhyay

Rural tourism is a lucrative business with many financial, environmental, and socio-cultural benefits however; the development of rural tourism compared to urban tourism is faced with numerous challenges related to its practicability and sustainability. The aim of this paper is to trace the viability and challenges affecting the motivations of rural tourists, in an attempt to improve the understanding of rural tourism motivation for the development of rural tourism in Nepal. The major argument of this paper is that rural tourism though based on need and right based concept, is lately introduced practice and one of the immense areas of entire tourism in Nepal. Principally, it is need based approach because underdeveloped rural area needs to have more jobs created and revenue to be generated. The rapid environmental crisis in urban areas mostly in Kathmandu and other big cities is widening the scope of the rural tourism outside the urban areas. As a phenomenon, rural tourism is related to natural environment, hill, mountains, agricultural terraces, river, rural society and countryside households representing conservation, life style free of cultural pollution, experience, adventure and above all benefit to the local people. A sustainable rural tourism is the product of the careful planning, management and monitoring of tourism development. This study highlighted the evolution of a new way of thinking about development in the form of the rural tourism sustainability paradigm, its viabilities and challenges. The application of the concept of sustainability to rural tourism development was traced, and some of the initiatives of the rural tourism industry were distinguished, culminating in emphasis of the fact that effective planning and implementations are crucial to the long-term economic, social and environmental sustainability of a destination and its rural tourism industry. However, local communities’ inclusion as more active participants in rural tourism development may result in increasing conflicts between them and other stakeholders, including urban tourism, government at local and national levels.Repositioning Vol.1(1) 2016: 37-52

Revealed logistical approach to achieve sustainable development of urban and rural kinds of tourism including practical examples of the most popular tourist destinations (cities) in Ukraine – Kyiv and Lviv. Logistics approach is based on applying the concept of spatial regulation of tourist flows in cities and rural areas (worked out by one of authors – Smyrnov I.G.) and the concept of reverse logistics for recycling of waste, which volume increases as usual after tourists visits. Fulfilled comparison of logistical features of urban and rural tourism in order to ensure their sustainability. For a common goal – to achieve sustainability of the tourism industry in a particular area and at the same functional purpose – by optimization (regulation) of tourist flows in appropriate way to the specific destinations considering their tourism resource base and distribution of tourist flows differences lie in the different resource base for tourism development. In the case of rural tourism resource base is: first, the landscape (natural landscapes); second, flora and fauna; third, agricultural production; fourth, various events (ethnographic, ethnomusic, ethnogastronomic and other ethnotouristic holidays and festivals). In the case of urban tourism the resource base is equally varied and includes: first, historical and modern buildings and other points of architectural interest; second, interurban objects (castles, museums, shopping and entertainment centers etc.); third, the natural environment (parks, botanical gardens etc.); fourth, various events (international, national, city celebrations, festivals and other social and cultural activities). There is difference in the case of rural and urban tourist flows distribution along the territory: typical for rural tourism is dispersing distribution (on farms), typical for urban tourism is concentrated distribution, particularly in the central and historic districts of cities. Accordingly major logistical tasks of ensuring the sustainability of tourism are also different: for rural tourism it is, first, to determine minimum and maximum volumes of tourist flows; second, is desired the waste recycling and monitoring of environmental conditions. For urban tourism main task is to determine the maximum tourist flows volume and as a must the waste recycling whith improving of environmental conditions. Also developed scientific and practical grounds of reverse ecologistics, i.e. logistics of waste recycling remaining after the tourists stay in urban and rural destinations. Proposed mathematical approach of ecologistical optimization of waste reusing (recycling) in destinations of urban and rural tourism.

Functioning of tourist business enterprises in the context of rural development
  • Mar 18, 2022
  • University Economic Bulletin
  • Iryna Romanіuk + 2 more

The subject of the research is the peculiarities of the functioning of tourism business enterprises in the context of rural development. The purpose of the article is to analyze the resource potential, conditions of organization and foreign experience of rural green tourism enterprises, assessment of the effectiveness of tourism and agricultural activities in rural areas. The methodological basis of the article is the methods and approaches of economic, institutional and sustainable development theory. In particular, systematic and holistic approaches, methods of analysis and synthesis, structural modeling were used; monographic; abstract-logical. The results of the article. It is determined that socio-economic resources of rural green tourism enterprises are understood as labor resources, accommodation facilities, separate utility rooms, machines and equipment or devices, production and technological processes (wine, food, oil and fat, fruit and vegetable canning, etc.), certain productions and activities growing flowers, medicinal herbs, farm animals, picking fruits and berries, mushrooms, honey production, fish farming, etc.) as sightseeing sites or tourist attractions. It is established that the tendency to increase the influence of tourism and resorts on the dynamics of economic and social development of the region is maintained by increasing domestic and foreign tourist flows, as well as increasing revenues from tourism to the local budget. It is substantiated that the assessment of economic efficiency of rural green tourism enterprises should be carried out on the basis of the volume of services provided by them, the costs of their implementation and profits. Field of application of results. The obtained results can be used in the process of further scientific study of an important problem – improving the efficiency of the market of tourist services and rural green tourism enterprises. Conclusions. It is established that rural green tourism enterprises in the leading countries of the world have developed significantly, and their number is 10.0-50.0 times higher than the number of domestic ones. Thus, rural green tourism is a mass activity, employment and income of rural residents. Therefore, in European countries, it is seen as an alternative to agriculture, where the number of employees is constantly declining due to automation and digitalization, and its support has become a state program. It also provides recreation for almost 1/3 of all tourists. Therefore, it is important to implement the most effective areas of experience in rural tourism in Ukraine. This is the organization of thematic annual advertising campaigns for rural recreation with state and regional support; indirect state support in the form of non-taxation; development of pilot projects for the development of rural green tourism for individual rural areas; combining rural green tourism with gastronomic, cognitive, etc. types of tourism; strengthening the greening of rural green tourism.

СТАН ВІТЧИЗНЯНИХ ДОСЛІДЖЕНЬ СІЛЬСЬКОГО ТА ЗЕЛЕНОГО АГРАРНОГО ТУРИЗМУ В УКРАЇНІ

  • Mariia Kazmyrchuk

The purpose of the article is to identify and characterize three main areas of domestic research on rural and green agricultural tourism in Ukraine, to analyze the current achievements of Ukrainian scientists and identify promising issues, and to formulate priorities for further research in this area. The study is based on the methods of historiographical research, in particular historiographical analysis and synthesis, to critically review the Ukrainian scientific literature. For the first time, three main areas of research on rural and green agrarian tourism in scientific articles by domestic scientists have been analyzed and systematized. The first direction is focused on the problems and prospects of rural and green agrarian tourism. In this area, the most common problem is insufficient state support and lack of control over the development of this industry. At the same time, most researchers propose to solve domestic problems of rural and green agrarian tourism, guided by the experience of foreign countries. The second area of research is represented by studies on the terms and concepts of different types of tourism in Ukrainian villages. In some scientific articles, a noticeable phenomenon is the small amount of scientific literature used, which makes it impossible to carry out an incomplete terminological analysis. Among the numerous terminological discussions of domestic researchers, it is worth noting the attempts to define the fundamental concepts and classify different types of tourism in rural areas, to explore the links and correlations between the terms «rural tourism», «agrotourism», «green tourism» and «ecotourism». The third area of current domestic research is aimed at studying regional levels of rural and green agricultural tourism development. Researchers are trying to understand which aspects of these types of tourism work effectively in specific regions of Ukraine due to their unique characteristics. This study is important and relevant in the context of assessing the current state of research on rural and green agricultural tourism in Ukraine. The originality of this study lies in its comprehensive approach to the analysis of modern scientific articles in the field of rural and green agricultural tourism in Ukraine and in the conclusions and recommendations that may be important for the further development of this field. The study is of practical value for the scientific community, representatives of the tourism business and public authorities, as it can contribute to understanding the needs and further development of rural and green agricultural tourism in Ukraine.

  • Gongyi Jiang + 4 more

This study conducts in-depth research on geographic information visualization and the sustainable development of low-carbon rural slow tourism under artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze and discuss the visualization of geographic information and the sustainable development of low-carbon slow tourism in rural areas. First, the development options related to low-carbon tourism in rural areas are discussed. Then, a low-carbon rural slow tourism recommendation method based on AI and a low-carbon rural tourism scene recognition method based on Cross-Media Retrieval (CMR) data are proposed. Finally, the proposed scheme is tested. The test results show that the carbon dioxide emissions of one-day tourism projects account for less than 10% of the total tourism industry. From the proportion, it is found that air transport accounts for the largest proportion, more than 40%. With the development of time, the number of rural slow tourists in Guizhou has increased the most, while the number of rural slow tourists in Yunnan has increased to a lesser extent. In the K-means clustering model, the accuracy of scenario classification based on the semantic features of scene attributes is 5.26% higher than that of attribute likelihood vectors. On the Support Vector Machine classifier, the scene classification accuracy based on the semantic features of scene attributes is 19.2% higher than that of the scene classification based on attribute likelihood vector features. CMR techniques have also played a satisfying role in identifying rural tourism scenarios. They enable passengers to quickly identify tourist attractions to save preparation time and provide more flexible time for the tour process. The research results have made certain contributions to the sustainable development of low-carbon rural slow tourism.

  • Tetiana Gakal

The formation of a strategy for the development of rural green tourism and its infrastructure is an important condition for creating an attractive investment climate in this area, the formation of motivation for rural residents. The purpose of the article is to study the main aspects of building a strategy for infrastructure support of rural green tourism enterprises in modern conditions. The results of the analysis of the given strategic directions of development of tourist infrastructure show that a small part of the Strategy is devoted to substantiation of future actions of the state for support and development of rural green tourism. The article presents a model of development of local infrastructure of rural green tourism. Rural tourism is an important factor in the development and intensification of depressed areas of rural areas and the fullness of local budgets. Increased domestic tourist flows can reduce unemployment, raise the regional economy, improve the living standards of local people and reduce the imbalance between urban and rural life. However, the growth of rural tourism can also have negative consequences for rural areas, especially for the environment. Increased tourism in rural areas poses an increasing risk of air, water and land pollution through the construction of tourism infrastructure and facilities, as well as losses from tourism operations that meet the needs of tourists.

  • Haoran Yang + 1 more

In recent years, with the continuous improvement of people's living standards, more and more people choose rural leisure tourism to relax, which temporarily helps them escape from the stress of busy work. General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized while attending the discussion of the 19th National People's Congress of Guizhou Province that it is not only necessary to encourage the development of country farmhouses, but also shall analyze and forecast rural tourism, and develop measures in advance to ensure the sustainable development of rural tourism. As a new emerging tourism project, rural tourism has been being accepted by all kinds of people. The prosperous development of rural tourism can not only effectively promote the development of rural economy and win the battle against poverty, but also is beneficial to the overall development between urban and rural areas. However, due to a lack of policy support and adequate public management during the development of rural tourism, the development of rural tourism in many areas has shown a disorganized state. In this paper, it analyzes the formulation of the government's public management mechanism in the current rural tourism development process, which will effectively improve the quality of rural tourism development, give a full play to the government's public management functions, and ensure stable development of the rural tourism industry.

Establishing environment sustentation strategies for urban and rural/town tourism based on a hybrid MCDM approach
  • Jul 20, 2019
  • Current Issues in Tourism
  • Chia-Li Lin

The initial views of community empowerment were considered residents as the subject for construction in the city and town. Because the development of city and town also increased tourism, in recent years residents have been encouraged to remodel with new styles and features. This study tries to explore the driving forces for the development of urban and rural/town tourism. The findings will allow stakeholders (residents, tourists, sojourners, and government) to reexamine the future for the development of urban and rural tourism and to rediscover new value-driving forces by the urban and rural/town tourism development. This study defines an evaluation system of urban and rural tourism by four aspects: cultural preservation, environment sustentation, economic development, and social consciousness. This study adopts the integrated MCDM approach to evaluate the SDI (Sustainable Development Index) for urban and rural/town tourism based on the five tourist towns in northern Taiwan. The research findings will help authorities understand the competitive advantages of tourism in each location and draw up development strategies for urban and rural/town tourism based on the common value of stakeholders. This study also proposes new viewpoints and tourist highlights to help stakeholders identify the next generation for tourism in urban and rural areas.
