Abstract

Young, well educated, and with high professional expectations, American press photographers like to call themselves photojournalists, a term that appeals to their need for recognition as journalists as well as photographers. But the real and the ideal don't always mix, and American 'photojournalists' tend to feel neglected and dissatisfied with their position in the newsroom pecking order. How Australian press photographers see themselves and their place and role in the journalistic scheme of things is anybody's guess. A projected study of Australian press photographers aims at filling in the gaps, shedding some light, and making some comparisons.
