Abstract
Nd isotopic variations in Atlantic seawater during the past 80 m.y., as deduced from both Nd and Sr isotopic compositions of marine deposits, are strongly related to major plate motions involving openings of the South Atlantic and the Drake Passage and closure of the Tethys seaway. Changes in the proportions of two main fluxes to the Atlantic, the admixture of Pacific seawater with radiogenic neodymium and continental components with nonradiogenic Nd (average river flux, North Atlantic Bottom Water), controlled the secular variation of Nd.
