Abstract

NbB inoculants are refiners that might be of interest to the Al industry. Grain size (GS) and secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) are two important microstructural variables to consider when assessing a refiner's performance. Both of these attributes may have an impact on the alloy’s properties. The interplay of grain refiner and cooling rate on grain size, SDAS, and grain shape in the 6201 alloy is investigated in this article. It is demonstrated that GS associated with rapid solidification of the 6201 + NbB alloy was roughly 7 times smaller than that associated with slow solidification. Furthermore, regardless of the processing method (either slow or fast solidification), α-Al cells are generated for GS/SDAS ratio below and equal to 6.
