Abstract

The purpose of this autoethnographic narrative is twofold. First, the discussion will explore the intersection of gender and age as it is discussed through the martial art experience of a female practitioner. Second, the mind/body relationship is discussed concerning reflexive body techniques. Through twenty years and more of a martial arts career, the intersection of gender and age is examined to highlight the transformation to empowerment while navigating internal and external barriers affecting training and advancement. This process also encapsulates how the mind can message the trained body in a gendered aging body discourse. Overall, this narrative indicates that martial arts can be used as a medium for the transformation to empowerment; however, this transformation is an act of perseverance.
