Abstract

An alternative to the thyristor controlled reactor for use in static VAr compensators is proposed based on the ability of the AC/DC power convertor to absorb controllable reactive power. The standard three-phase bridge configuration is modified, using the concept of DC ripple reinjection, to achieve high pulse operation without the need for passive harmonic filtering. A 36-pulse scaled-down test system is used to verify the theoretical predictions.
