Abstract
Natural variation in 5-seeded fruits of Uapaca kirkiana was investigated in Central and Northern Zambia during the fruiting season. Results revealed large variations in the fruit, skin, seed and pulp volume between the various-seeded fruits. In all areas, the 4-seeded fruits consistently were larger and thinner-skinned, and contained the most pulp. The largest of these fruits, found in Munte forests of Serenje district (central Zambia), had an average volume of 26.68 cm 3 with 12.77 cm 3 of pulp. These results suggest the grading of fruits according to size at harvest.
