Abstract
The support of the Commission of the European Communities for surveys of natural radiation has improved the data available. Studies carried out by the National Radiological Protection Board on behalf of the CEC have shown that the production of an atlas of natural radiation for Europe is feasible. The atlas will cover western Europe and will contain maps, by administrative area, of terrestrial gamma rays, both outdoors and indoors, cosmic rays, and as available, indoor radon. The atlas is intended for a wide audience, including pupils in secondary schools, and the succinct text will be translated into the Community languages. Individual countries are providing data to NRPB and the first components to be mapped are cosmic rays and outdoor gamma rays. The cosmic ray component is calculated from latitude and altitude: the outdoor gamma ray dose rates are measured values. Progress on the atlas is discussed and the first maps presented.
