Abstract

The purpose of this study is to establish the natural convection heat transfer characteristics of a vertical finite-length plate on an adiabatic floor. The numerical calculation was performed for Grashof numbers in the range of 0.1 to 105 and for the prandtl number of 0.71. The average heat transfer coefficients were measured for Grashof numbers in the range of 50 to 106. The numerical results were in good agreement with the experimental results. The local heat transfer coefficients are low at the lower end of the plate because of the adiabatic floor. The correlations between average Nusselt number and Grashof number are as follows : Nu=1.71 Gr0.034 4 (0.1≤Gr≤4) and Nu=1.39 Gr0.185(4≤Gr≤106). Furthermore, the effect of the adiabatic ceiling set on the upper end of the plate was studied through numerical analysis and experiment. The correlations between average Nusselt number and Grashof number are as follows : Nu=1.24 Gr0.0499(0.1≤Gr≤4) and Nu=1.01 Gr0.200(4≤Gr≤106).
